Dear Valued Customer,

As part of ongoing improvements to networks and services, Level 3 has deployed new authoritative name servers for former tw telecom customers. To utilize these new name servers, update your authoritative name servers with your domain registrar. Please note that failure to make this change will result in extensive down time to your domain resolution, as we will be decommissioning the legacy name servers.

If you do not know who your domain registrar is, please visit https://whois.icann.org/en.

Please follow the directions below to ensure a smooth upgrade to the new servers.

For Primary DNS Hosting:

1. Please ADD the Level 3 DNS servers below as the authoritative name servers for your domain name at the domain registrar:

Primary DNS server:
ns3.level3.net
216.136.95.12

Secondary DNS server:
ns4.level3.net
64.132.94.251

2.  Please DELETE the tw telecom DNS servers below as the authoritative name servers for your domain name at the domain registrar:

Primary DNS server:
ns1.twtelecom.net
216.136.95.2

Secondary DNS server:
ns2.twtelecom.net
64.132.94.250

For Secondary/ Slave DNS Hosting:

  1. Please complete the above steps to update your name servers.
  2. Please do not add 207.250.222.10 hostmaster.mgmt.twtelecom.net in your zone record.
  3. Please allow 207.250.222.10 to pull the zone records from your master name server through port 53 for TCP and UDP.
  4. Please configure your name server to notify 207.250.222.10 whenever a change is made to the zone records.
  5. Change your zone records' serial number (increment it) so that it will notify our name server of the new zone.
  6. Please notify us by sending email to dnsteam@level3.com when the above actions have been performed so that we may verify that the set-up is complete.

We are also making changes to the relay servers and backup mail servers. Effective June 1st, all customers using the Level 3 mail servers must be RFC compliant and adhere to the requirements below:

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. I am using ns3.level3.net and ns4.level3.net and I unable to reach the Internet. Why?
    A. ns3.level3.net and ns4.level3.net are strictly for authoritative DNS hosting. Please use resolver1.level3.net (209.244.0.3) and resolver2.level3.net (209.244.0.4) for internet access.
  2. This is a short notice. Why?
    A. We apologize for the inconvenience, but the quick turn-around time will allow us to check each domain name and make sure that all domains have been migrated prior to decommissioning the servers.
  3. I need more time.
    A. If you are running into any problems, please contact dnsteam@level3.com so we can work with you to resolve the issue.
  4. Will this change affect my service?
    A. For primary hosted domains, no. We have built your zone records to include name servers: ns1.twtelecom.net, ns2.twtelecom.net, ns3.level3.net, and ns4.level3.net to minimize impact. We will update your records and remove twtelecom.net name servers once all domains have migrated.

For secondary hosted domains, YES – THIS WILL AFFECT YOUR SERVICE. Level 3 does not have control over your domains and if you do not update, it will affect your service when we decommission the legacy name servers.
