Level 3 Connects Network to Equinix Centers

Level 3 Expects to Provide Low Cost Bandwidth Services to Internet Content Providers and other Customers in Six Equinix Centers by Year's End

BROOMFIELD, Colo., October 10, 2000 – Level 3 Communications, Inc. (Nasdaq:LVLT) today announced it has connected its Internet protocol (IP) network to Equinix (Nasdaq:EQIX) centers in the Los Angeles, New York and Silicon Valley metropolitan areas.

Level 3 already provides low cost bandwidth services to Internet content providers and other customers in these three Equinix centers, and expects to offer services in additional Equinix locations in the Chicago, Dallas and Washington, D.C. metropolitan areas by year's end. The agreement with Equinix, an operator of neutral Internet Business Exchange (IBX) centers where Internet businesses can directly interconnect with each other, enables Level 3 to continue to expand availability of its low cost bandwidth services beyond its own data centers.

Level 3 currently provides Internet protocol (IP) network services in 47 Level 3 data centers, called Gateways, in the United States, Europe and Asia. The company has more than 4.4 million square feet of data center space around the world, and has pre-funded the acquisition and construction of another 2.1 million square feet.

"We're pleased to announce that we expect to offer our services in Equinix's Chicago, Dallas and Washington, D.C. area IBX centers by the end of this year," said Carlos Lopez-Abadia, vice president of Global Gateway Services for Level 3. "Service availability in these additional locations, combined with our already live services in the Los Angeles, New York metropolitan area and Silicon Valley centers, enables Level 3 to offer its low cost bandwidth services to more Internet content providers and other IP intensive customers. Our relationship with Equinix gives Level 3 an important marketing channel that will drive additional traffic onto our metropolitan and intercity networks."

Level 3 plans to offer a variety of services in the Equinix IBX centers, including (3)CrossRoads EPOP, a new service that uses Ethernet technology to offer high-speed Internet access to businesses at approximately half the cost of similar services. The new (3)CrossRoads EPOP service provides one-gigabit per second Internet access for customers in non-Level 3 colocation centers, carrier hotels and other facilities that cater to IP intensive businesses.

Additional services Level 3 expects to make available in the Equinix IBX centers include (3)Voice, Managed Modem, Global Wavelengths, (3)CrossRoads and other network services.

(*Softswitches are advanced software based switching systems that enable Level 3 to provide services combining the best features of the Internet and traditional telephone networks.)

(3)CrossRoads, (3)CrossRoads, and (3)Voice are service marks of Level 3 Communications, Inc. in the United States and/or other countries. Internet Business Exchange and IBX are trademarks of Equinix, Inc.
