Agreement with Telseon Facilitates Faster, Less Expensive Local Access to Level 3's Continuously Upgradeable Global Broadband Network
BROOMFIELD, Colo., Jan. 24, 2001 - Level 3 Communications, Inc. (Nasdaq:LVLT) today announced an agreement with Telseon that expands Level 3's U.S. customer base. Specifically, Level 3 is using Telseon's metropolitan Ethernet network connections to Internet data centers and other buildings not previously served by Level 3 to provide (3)CrossRoads Internet access to communications-intensive customers in more than 20 U.S. markets. (3)CrossRoads is a high performance network service that can lower bandwidth costs for communications-intensive companies by as much as 50 percent.
"Our agreement with Telseon enables more companies to gain faster, less expensive access to Level 3's continuously upgradeable global broadband network," said Dan Caruso, senior vice president of Global Transport and IP Services for Level 3. "Telseon's extensive Ethernet-based metropolitan networks allow us to extend the reach of (3)CrossRoads into additional facilities that give us an excellent opportunity to drive more traffic onto our metropolitan, long-haul and undersea networks."
"Level 3 will be able to extend the footprint of its broadband services, and the Telseon network will expand to include key on and off ramps to Level 3's IP backbone," said Mike McHale, chief operating officer at Telseon. "Telseon is working with Level 3 to simplify data communications with a continuous optical network that provides cost-effective Internet access services on an instantly scaleable Ethernet platform."
Everest Broadband Corporation among Initial Customers
Fort Lee, NJ-based Everest Broadband, a leading building services provider of high-speed voice, data and ASP services for multi-tenant (MTU) buildings, is among the initial (3)CrossRoads customers using the combined
Level 3/Telseon service.
"Everest Broadband chose the combined Level 3/Telseon service because it can be provisioned faster and is less expensive than competing local and long-distance Internet access services," said Shiv Padhi, director of business for Everest Broadband. About (3)CrossRoads Internet Access Service
(3)CrossRoads is an IP-based Internet access service that offers a wide range of interface types and access locations, including a Gigabit Ethernet (1,000 Mbps) customer interface option. Level 3 employs a unique network approach to track the destination of IP packets and monitor the bandwidth usage on its high-capacity, continuously upgradeable fiber optic network. (3)CrossRoads features Destination Sensitive Billing (DSB), the industry's first pricing based on the destination of Internet traffic rather than traditional flat rate pricing. The new service enables Level 3 customers to enjoy long-term cost savings and bypass congested Internet exchange points, minimizing latency and improving the end-user experience. (3)CrossRoads service is available today in 39 major North American markets where Level 3 owns and operates Internet and communications facilities called "Gateways," including Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington, D.C. Level 3 also offers (3)CrossRoads service in nine European and two Asian markets.
Level 3 customers can take advantage of (3)CrossRoads from a Level 3 Gateway, their own premises, and other IP-enabled facilities connected to the Level 3 network - such as neutral colocation centers and carrier hotels.
