Level 3 Announces Undersea Broadband Agreement with France Telecom in Asia

France Telecom First Company to Purchase Capacity on Level 3?s New Undersea Cable System Connecting Hong Kong and Tokyo

BROOMFIELD, Colo., June 13, 2001 - Level 3 Communications, Inc. (Nasdaq:LVLT) today announced it has signed a new agreement to provide international private line service to France Telecom on Level 3's new North Asian undersea cable system connecting Hong Kong and Japan. Level 3 expects to announce activation of the new cable system at a press conference later this month in Asia.

This new contract follows an announcement last month that France Telecom is leasing a 2.5-gigabit per second circuit from Level 3 between New York and California using Level 3's (3)Link Private Line service. Previously, the companies announced an agreement in October 2000 under which France Telecom purchased dark fiber and related services throughout Level 3's North American network for more than $100 million.

"This agreement underscores Level 3's commitment to providing cost-effective broadband services to communications-intensive companies in key Asian markets," said Steve Liddell, CEO of Level 3 in Asia. "Level 3's new North Asian undersea cable system is a key component of our global broadband infrastructure, and provides seamless, end-to-end connectivity to major markets around the world by linking to the Japan-U.S. undersea cable and Level 3's extensive IP network in the U.S. and Europe."
