
California Institute of Technology Signs 10-Year Metropolitan Dark Fiber Agreement
London's City University Purchases Colocation and Metropolitan Dark Fiber Services
BROOMFIELD, Colo., October 21, 2002 - Level 3 Communications, Inc. (Nasdaq:LVLT) today announced it has signed broadband infrastructure agreements with the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and London's City University.
Specifically, Caltech signed a 10-year IRU agreement for metropolitan dark fiber in Los Angeles. London's City University signed a three-year agreement for colocation and metropolitan dark fiber services in London.
"Level 3's colocation and dark fiber services provide our students and academics with a rapid broadband connection to the worldwide web, a vital tool enabling us to access and exchange information key to maintaining our position as one of Britain's top educational and research institutions," stated Peter Leggett, computing services director for City University. "Their delivery intervals allowed us to meet our project deadlines in time for the start of term."
John Dundas, director of ITS Infrastructure for Caltech said, "Dark fiber services from Level 3 enable Caltech to fully participate in the next generation of CENIC's CalREN-2 and provide enhanced connectivity with Internet 2. Academic and research interests will be served in a cost effective way not previously possible."
